I am deeply humbled and thankful to be given the opportunity to serve as Director of the Philippine General Hospital. The gravity of history and expectations that come with our beloved institution is immeasurable and I face this with excitement in my veins, a prayer in my heart and practical optimism in my mind.
The road was not as simple as I wished it to be but the direction I want to go is as clear as ever. Since the time of the selection process for the new director I have been consistent on what I believe must be accomplished in the years to come: a back to the basics infrastructure rehabilitation program; taking better care of our human resources; and improving systems to ensure our sustainability while delivering accessible specialized care to the public.
The first few months have been very rewarding as we started planning and implementing our projects and programs. We received recognition for our efforts in the form of sustaining our ISO 9001:2008 certification and our accreditation as a Center of Excellence by the Philippine Health Insurance Corporation. The timely delivery of workers’ benefits and the rehabilitation of basic infrastructure and equipment are underway. Changes in our disbursement and procurement practices to enhance efficiency and transparency are also forthcoming.
There is a lot of labor ahead of us but with a lot of perseverance, professionalism and dedication I know it can all be done. I assure the whole PGH community and the public we serve that I will always work towards your best interest and for the good of our country and our people. I hope that you will all join me in this quest.

The Philippine General Hospital trains an average of 160 medical students from the UP College of Medicine annually. This same number will usually be accepted as medical interns in their last year at medical school. An additional 80-90 post graduate interns from other medical schools are also accepted from the most qualified of approximately a thousand applicants from all over the country. These medical interns undergo a rigorous course of clinical rotation in all departments and their respective sections for one year. Didactics, ward rounds and preceptorship, emergency room duties, out-patient clinics, operating theater rotations and departmental and interdepartmental conferences are included in the clinical rotation.
PGH exists because, in health, we are our brother' keepers. With a "TATAK PGH"anner of treating our patients, we ensure that all patients understand their conditions and are able to participate in their own treatments. We have 19 clinical departments each worth with its own array of general, specialty, subspecialty and cuttingedge units and offering excellent facilities. The delivery of comprehensive care for both healthy and sick Filipinos, especially the poor and marginalized.
The Philippine General Hospital recognizes that research is an integral part of being a University Hospital. Furthermore, the PGH realizes that quality training and service are enhanced by quality research.
The PGH research committee was established in 1995 to address the hospital's research needs. In the same year, the first PGH Residents' and Fellows' Forum was held followed shortly by the first PGH Nurses' Research Forum. The first issue of the PGH research journal was also published in 1995. In 1996, several research activities were undertaken, the PGH Ethics Committee was formed and a Hospital Research Week was held. A research fund was also setup to fund commissioned researches and grants.
