The Department of Ophthalmology is the leading training, research and clinical facility in ophthalmology in the country. Since its inception, significant changes in the department were initiated. Emphasis was given to teaching, especially at the post-graduate level, and a basic course in ophthalmology was introduced in the residency program. The physical facilities were renovated, and the number of equipment increased by more than double. New technology were adopted and complemented by specialized surgical training programs especially in cataract, retina and intraocular lens implantation.
The department remains steadfast to continuously acquire more sophisticated equipment currently used in modern eye hospitals in developed countries to complement its existing facilities for the purpose of making advanced technology available to less privileged sectors of the population. With the establishment of the Sentro Oftalmologico Jose Rizal Eye Center, it will be able to realize its aspirations of increasing the general public’s accessibility to excellent ophthalmic services and prevention of blindness.
