General Summary

The Department of Orthopedics is committed to producing relevant, ethical, culturally-sensitive & globally competitive research.  We provide an atmosphere conducive to producing high quality research to answer the needs of our patients, the country, and the rest of the world.

The department is still at the forefront of Orthopedic research, with one consultant published twice internationally in the last year. We ended a productive year with 8 papers and 11 protocols completed.  This was made possible by close collaboration between consultants and residents.  Dr. Balce presented a paper in The Combined Meeting of 28^th ASEAN Orthopaedic Association and 38^th Malaysian Orthopaedic Association Annual General Meeting/Annual Scientific Meeting in Kula Lumpur, Malaysia.  Dr. Gaston presented 2 papers at the 7^th Asia Pacific Musculoskeletal Tumor Society Meeting in Beijing, China and 1 paper in the SICOT/SIROT 2008 XXIV Triennial World Congress in Hong Kong.  Dr. Gaston also won 1^st Place at The 2008 Resident’s Interesting Case Contest.   During the Philippine Orthopedic Association Annual Convention 6 posters from residents and 3 from consultants were presented.

There were three successful intra-departmental research workshops on formulating a research question, critical appraisal of published literature, research design and protocol writing.  The year ended with the Annual Resident’s Research Forum where completed papers and protocols were presented and judged.

The department also has 2 ongoing studies on extrapulmonary TB and DVT prophylaxis.  Our goal is to increase the research competency of our staff and to publish more papers in ISI journals within the next three years.
