About us:

IN-PATIENT SERVICE

The IN-PATIENT SERVICE of the department addresses the need of patients who are admitted at Ward 7 of the hospital. It is equipped with 22 beds for acute psychiatric care and it caters to children, adolescents and adult patients. It aims to provide a holistic therapeutic environment wherein the mentally-ill can be accepted, understood and given the chance to maximize their potentials in an in-patient setting.

OUTPATIENT SERVICES

OUTPATIENT SERVICES are provided at the third floor of the out-patient building of the Philippine General Hospital fronting Padre Faura Street. It consists of nine interview rooms. Two kinds of services are provided by the section – screening services of new patients and follow-up consultation services. Here, the focus of psychiatric care is on the attainment of optimal functioning both at home and in the community.

TWENTY-FOUR HOUR EMERGENCY SERVICES

TWENTY-FOUR HOUR EMERGENCY SERVICES are provided for patients requiring urgent psychiatric evaluation and management at the PGH Emergency Room Complex. These services are delivered by Psychiatry Residents on duty. Emergency psychiatric care for referrals from other PGH medical and surgical units are likewise provided.

CONSULTATION-LIAISON SERVICES

CONSULTATION-LIAISON SERVICES are provided for patients with medical and surgical illnesses who are admitted at other wards of PGH who need psychiatric evaluation and management. Residents likewise serve as members of multidisciplinary teams in the different hospital units such as the Pain Clinic, Renal Dialysis Unit, CARE Unit, Burn Unit, Breast Care Center, Cancer Institute and the Center for Memory and Cognition.

CHILD AND ADOLESCENT PATIENTS

Services are offered to CHILD AND ADOLESCENT PATIENTS through the Section of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry. Patients are evaluated and managed either at the emergency room, inpatient or outpatient settings. These children have special needs which are fulfilled by the department using special facilities (play therapy room, interview room etc) and special mode of therapy (art therapy, music therapy, group therapy etc).

COMMUNITY-ORIENTED Services

The department transcends the role of the psychiatrist as an individual-oriented specialist and aims to respond to the mental health needs of the population through its COMMUNITY-ORIENTED Services. Regular community-based projects and programs are conducted for both children and adults. Some of these services include disaster work for victims of tragedies, liaison with schools and mental health advocacy projects.

DAY CENTER

As an adjunct to out-patient care, the Department also offers a service called the DAY CENTER to patients who have just been discharged from the ward and who may benefit from structured occupational therapy activities.

PATIENT SUPPORT GROUP

Cognizant of the fact that mental illness has far-reaching effects not only on persons who are ill but also on their families, and that such families therefore need a great deal of psychosocial support, the Department has two support groups for family members and patients : the FAMILY MENTAL HEALTH GROUP ( for in-patients ) and H.O.P.E. (for outpatients).
