We are on the leading edge of cerebrovascular surgery
| We treated the most number of patients harboring intracranial aneurysms. Last year, the section treated 92 patients with aneurysms by craniotomy and application of aneurysm clips, 26 of which were done via keyhole approaches. | |
| We also did excision of 11 intracranial arteriovenous malformations. | |
| We also initiated the endovascular treatment programs for intracranial aneurysms and arteriovenous malformations. |
We also treated the most number of CNS tumor patients
| Last year, the section did craniotomy & excision of supratentorial tumors for 118 patients. | |
| We treated 28 patients with cerebellopontine angle lesions. | |
| Twenty-eight patients with pituitary adenomas underwent transphenoidal excision of their tumors here. |
We also serve as the major neurosurgical trauma center in the Philippines
| One hundred eight trauma patients underwent craniotomy for evacuation of hematoma in the past year; 33 underwent debridement of open, depressed skull fractures. |
We are also a leader in Neuroendoscopy
| We did 27 endoscopic procedures in 2004. |
We also lead in Pediatric Neurosurgery
| Two hundred thirteen ventriculoperitoneal shunting procedures were done last year. |
Annual Report
| The total number of elective operations in 2004 was 405, or an average of 33.75 operations a month. In addition, 547 emergency operations (an average of 45.6 operations a month) were done. Our annual report shows all of these figures in detail. |
Daily Census
| Currently, the section has an average daily census of 60-90 patients. |
Facilities
| There are two operating rooms dedicated to neurosurgical procedures, and a dedicated eight-bed neurosurgical intensive care unit. |
Patients
| The section's patients are a major source of data for research. Collection of data for the Vascular Database as well as the Neuroendocrine Database are ongoing. |
The Staff
| The section is under the Department of Neurosciences, ably led by Willy G. Lopez, MD. | |
| The Section Chief is Gerardo D. Legaspi, MD, who is one of the major proponents of keyhole surgery for aneurysms in the country. | |
| There are seven neurosurgeons on the staff, with 9 residents-in-training. | |
